The Bornean orangutan lives only on the island of Borneo. Its name comes from Malay words often translated as person of the forest.

Orangutans are the largest tree dwelling animals, spending most of their lives in the rainforest canopy, where they eat fruit, leaves, and bark.

Amazing Facts

Young orangutans stay with their mothers for about seven or eight years, one of the longest childhoods in the animal world. They use tools and build a new sleeping nest each night.

Conservation

Habitat loss from logging and plantations has made the Bornean orangutan critically endangered. Rescue centers and forest protection are working to save them.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
