Giant pandas live in mountain forests in central China. Bamboo makes up nearly all of their diet, and a panda may spend 10 to 16 hours a day eating.

Pandas have an enlarged wrist bone that works like a thumb, helping them grip bamboo stalks.

Amazing Facts

Newborn panda cubs are tiny, about the size of a stick of butter, and are born pink and nearly hairless. Their black and white coloring develops over the first few weeks.

Conservation

Habitat protection and breeding programs helped wild panda numbers increase, and in 2016 the giant panda was moved from endangered to vulnerable.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
