The white tailed deer is the official state animal of Ohio and is found in every county. Deer live in forests, farmland, and suburbs across much of North and South America.

When alarmed, a deer raises its tail to flash the white underside, a warning signal to other deer.

Amazing Facts

Bucks grow and shed antlers every year. Fawns are born with white spots that help them hide in dappled sunlight while their mothers feed nearby.

Driving Tip

Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, especially in the fall. Slow down in wooded areas, and if you see one deer, watch for others following.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
