Mountain gorillas live in cool, misty forests in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They live in family groups led by a mature male called a silverback.
Gorillas eat mostly leaves, stems, and shoots, and adult males can weigh around 350 to 450 pounds.
Amazing Facts
Gorillas build fresh nests of leaves and branches to sleep in each night. Thanks to strong protection and careful tourism, mountain gorilla numbers have grown, and their status improved from critically endangered to endangered in 2018.
Ohio Connection
The Columbus Zoo celebrated Colo, the first gorilla born in a zoo, in 1956. She lived to age 60 and became a beloved part of Ohio history.
Watch Responsibly
