Lions are the only big cats that live in social groups called prides. A pride usually includes several related females, their cubs, and one or more adult males. Most wild lions live in sub Saharan Africa, with a small population in India’s Gir Forest.

Females do most of the hunting, often working together to bring down zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo, while males defend the territory.

Amazing Facts

A lion’s roar can be heard up to about five miles away. Lions rest for much of the day, sometimes 16 to 20 hours, saving energy for hunting at dawn, dusk, or night.

Conservation

Lions have disappeared from much of their former range and are listed as vulnerable. Conflict with livestock owners and habitat loss are major threats.

Watch Responsibly

Whether you are on safari, in a national park, or at an Ohio zoo, give wild animals space, follow posted rules, and never feed wildlife. Supporting accredited zoos and conservation groups helps protect these animals and their habitats for future generations.
