The Wild Turkey is North America’s largest game bird. Males, called toms or gobblers, fan their tails and puff their feathers to impress females.

Turkeys eat acorns, seeds, insects, and berries. After disappearing from much of Ohio, they were successfully restored and are now common in many areas.

Where to See It

Woodlands and farm edges, especially in eastern and southern Ohio.

Birding Tip

Look for flocks in fields at dawn in spring, when gobbling is at its peak.

Fun Fact

Despite their size, Wild Turkeys can fly and roost in trees at night.

Help Birds Thrive

Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
