The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America. It has black and white markings, and males have a small red patch on the back of the head.
Downies search tree bark for insects and readily visit suet feeders. Their gentle drumming on trees is a common sound in Ohio woods.
Where to See It
Backyards, parks, and woodlands. Offer suet in winter to attract them.
Fun Fact
Downy Woodpeckers sometimes feed on goldenrod galls to reach the insects living inside.
Help Birds Thrive
Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
