Shotguns are smoothbore long guns that usually fire many small pellets with each shot.
Pump action shotguns are cycled by sliding the forend back and forth. Semiautomatic shotguns cycle on their own. Break action shotguns hinge open to load, and come as single barrel, side by side or over and under designs often used for clay sports.
Pin Tip
Match the shell to the gun. Check the gauge and chamber length stamped on the barrel before loading.
Understanding Gauge
Gauge describes bore size. A 12 gauge is the most common, while a 20 gauge has less recoil and is popular with newer and smaller shooters.
Safety and Training
New owners should take a certified firearm safety course, buy only from a federally licensed dealer and check current state and local laws before buying, carrying or transporting any firearm. Local ranges and hunter education programs are great places to learn safely.
