Semiautomatic pistols are the most common modern handguns. They fire one round per trigger pull and reload the chamber automatically.

Cartridges are stored in a removable magazine in the grip. When a round is fired, the slide moves back, ejects the empty case and loads the next round. Pistols come in full size, compact and subcompact versions to suit different hands and uses.

Pin Tip

Removing the magazine does not unload a pistol. Always lock the slide back and check the chamber too.

Choosing a Size

Larger pistols are usually easier to shoot accurately and have less felt recoil, while smaller ones are easier to carry but harder to master.

Safety and Training

New owners should take a certified firearm safety course, buy only from a federally licensed dealer and check current state and local laws before buying, carrying or transporting any firearm. Local ranges and hunter education programs are great places to learn safely.
