James K. Polk served as the 11th President of the United States from 1845 to 1849. A Tennessee Democrat and former Speaker of the House, he was a surprise nominee in 1844 who promised to serve just one term.

Polk kept that promise and is often noted for achieving nearly all of his major stated goals.

Key Moments

The Oregon Treaty of 1846 settled the northwest border with Britain. The Mexican American War from 1846 to 1848 ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, adding California and much of the Southwest. He also restored the independent treasury and lowered tariffs.

Did You Know

Polk died of cholera in June 1849, only about three months after leaving office, the shortest retirement of any president.
