James Armistead was an enslaved man in Virginia who volunteered to spy for the American cause under the Marquis de Lafayette.
Posing as a runaway, he gathered valuable information from British camps before the decisive Battle of Yorktown.
Earning Freedom
With Lafayette’s support, Virginia granted him freedom in 1787, and he took the name Lafayette in honor of his commander.
