Medina County was created in 1812 and organized in 1818. It was named for the city of Medina in present day Saudi Arabia, and its county seat shares the same name.

The Medina Public Square is famous for its Victorian architecture, much of it rebuilt after fires in the 1870s. Its gazebo, shops, and historic courthouse make it one of the most charming town squares in Ohio.

In 1869 A. I. Root founded a beekeeping supply business in Medina that grew into a nationally known company, earning the city a reputation as a home of honey. Farms, small towns, and growing suburbs define the county today.
