Lake County was created in 1840 from parts of Geauga and Cuyahoga counties. It is the smallest county in Ohio by land area, and its county seat is Painesville.

Settlers from New England arrived in the Western Reserve era, and Fairport Harbor grew into an active Lake Erie port. Its historic lighthouse, built in 1871, now houses a marine museum.

In 1880 James A. Garfield ran his successful presidential campaign from his Mentor home, known as Lawnfield. In Kirtland, the historic Kirtland Temple was dedicated in 1836 and remains an important landmark of the Latter Day Saint movement.
