Ashland County was formed in 1846 from parts of Richland, Wayne, Huron, and Lorain counties. Its county seat, the city of Ashland, was first known as Uniontown and was renamed in 1822 in honor of Ashland, the Kentucky estate of statesman Henry Clay.

Rolling farmland, woodlands, and small villages have defined the county since its earliest days. John Chapman, the legendary Johnny Appleseed, traveled this area in the early 1800s planting apple nurseries, and local markers still recall his stories.

Ashland University was founded in 1878 and remains an anchor of the community. In the southern part of the county, Loudonville serves as a gateway to the forests, rivers, and trails of the Mohican region.
