Diverticulosis means small pouches, called diverticula, have formed in the wall of the colon. It is common, especially after age 50, and often causes no symptoms.

Diverticulitis happens when one or more of those pouches becomes inflamed or infected. It can cause abdominal pain, often on the lower left side, along with fever, nausea, or changes in bowel habits.
