Proofing yeast confirms that it is alive and ready to rise your dough. Dissolve active dry yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar and wait about ten minutes.

If the mixture turns foamy and smells yeasty, you are ready to go. If nothing happens, the yeast may be expired or the water may have been too hot. Water around 105°F to 110°F works well.

Pin Tip

Use an instant read thermometer to check water temperature instead of guessing with your finger.

Quick Baking Checklist

Read the whole recipe before you start, measure ingredients accurately, preheat the oven fully, and set a timer a few minutes early so you can check for doneness. Small habits like these prevent most baking mistakes.

Make It Your Own

Once you master the basic method, experiment with flavors you love, such as citrus zest, warm spices, toasted nuts, or a different chocolate. Keep notes so you can repeat your favorite version.
