Abdul El-Sayed announced his U.S. Senate campaign on April 17, 2025, after Senator Gary Peters said he would not seek reelection.
Fellow Democrat Mallory McMorrow left the race in July 2026. El-Sayed then defeated Representative Haley Stevens in the August 5, 2026 primary by about one percentage point, and Stevens endorsed him in her concession.
Since the primary, he said in August 2026 that commentator Hasan Piker does not speak for his campaign, and he apologized for remarks he made after the 2026 attack on Temple Israel, saying he should have just issued a statement.
