The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed in southern Africa to track and hold lions at bay for hunters.

Its signature feature is a ridge of hair along the back that grows in the opposite direction. Ridgebacks are loyal and dignified.

Care Tips

They need daily exercise and consistent training.

Fun Fact

Is This Breed Right for You?

Before bringing home any dog, think about your space, schedule, budget, and activity level. Meet the dog in person, ask about energy and grooming needs, and consider an adult dog whose personality is already known. Ohio shelters and breed rescues often have purebred dogs and loving mixes waiting for homes.

Health and Training

Schedule a veterinary checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask about health screenings common to the breed. Positive reinforcement training and early socialization help every dog become a confident, well mannered companion.
