The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is the smallest recognized dog breed.

Chihuahuas are sassy, loyal, and confident, often bonding closely with one person.

Care Tips

Keep them warm, handle gently, and watch dental health.

Fun Fact

Chihuahuas are thought to descend from the Techichi, a dog kept by the ancient Toltec people.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Before bringing home any dog, think about your space, schedule, budget, and activity level. Meet the dog in person, ask about energy and grooming needs, and consider an adult dog whose personality is already known. Ohio shelters and breed rescues often have purebred dogs and loving mixes waiting for homes.

Health and Training

Schedule a veterinary checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask about health screenings common to the breed. Positive reinforcement training and early socialization help every dog become a confident, well mannered companion.
