The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany in the 1800s as a versatile hunting dog that could point, track, and retrieve on land or water.

GSPs are athletic, friendly, and smart, with a short coat that is often liver and white.

Care Tips

They need lots of vigorous exercise, such as running or hiking. A bored GSP can become destructive.

Fun Fact

A GSP named CJ won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2016.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Before bringing home any dog, think about your space, schedule, budget, and activity level. Meet the dog in person, ask about energy and grooming needs, and consider an adult dog whose personality is already known. Ohio shelters and breed rescues often have purebred dogs and loving mixes waiting for homes.

Health and Training

Schedule a veterinary checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask about health screenings common to the breed. Positive reinforcement training and early socialization help every dog become a confident, well mannered companion.
