The American Bobtail was developed in the United States in the 1960s. Its naturally short tail is usually about one third to one half the length of a typical cat’s tail.
These sturdy, medium to large cats come in short and long coats. Owners describe them as affectionate and adaptable, and some even learn to play fetch.
Care Tips
Brush once or twice a week, more often for longhaired cats. They enjoy interactive toys and time with their people.
Fun Fact
Their wild look comes from careful breeding, but American Bobtails are fully domestic and known for being easygoing travelers.
Is This Breed Right for You?
Every cat is an individual, so meet the cat before you decide. Think about your schedule, grooming time, other pets, and children in the home. Breed rescues and Ohio shelters often have purebred and mixed breed cats waiting for homes, and adult cats come with personalities you can see right away.
Health Basics
Schedule a checkup soon after adoption, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and ask your veterinarian about health issues common to the breed. Responsible breeders should share health screening results and welcome your questions.
