The Douglas C47 Skytrain was the military version of the DC3 airliner. It carried troops, cargo, and wounded soldiers throughout World War II.
On D Day, hundreds of C47s dropped paratroopers behind the beaches of Normandy and towed gliders into France.
Berlin Airlift
After the war, C47s helped fly food and coal into West Berlin during the Berlin Airlift of 1948 and 1949.
Still Flying
Some C47s and DC3s remain in service and at air shows more than 80 years after the first ones were built.
See It in Person
Ohio is a great place to see military history up close. The National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton is free and displays hundreds of aircraft, and local veterans memorials, county historical societies, and VFW and American Legion posts across the state often display vehicles and artifacts. Thank a veteran when you visit.
