Ohio’s primary was scheduled for March 17, 2020. As COVID 19 spread, Governor DeWine sought to postpone in person voting, but a judge ruled he lacked the authority.

Late that night Dr. Amy Acton issued a public health order closing polling places.

The legislature then set a new process, and the primary was completed largely by mail, with results announced in late April 2020.

Ongoing Debate

Supporters said the order protected voters and poll workers, while critics questioned the use of health powers to change an election date.
