In summer, male American Goldfinches are bright lemon yellow with black wings and caps. In winter they change to a softer olive brown.
Goldfinches eat seeds and love thistle, nyjer, and sunflower feeders. They nest later in the summer than most birds, when plant seeds are plentiful.
Where to See It
Fields, gardens with coneflowers and sunflowers, and backyard feeders.
Fun Fact
Goldfinches have a bouncy, roller coaster flight pattern and often call while flying.
Help Birds Thrive
Native plants, clean water, and a few safe places to shelter make any yard more welcoming to birds. Keep feeders clean, place them away from windows, and keep cats indoors to protect local wildlife.
